    • Unfortunately I am not planning to release a version of Speedy Painter for Mac in the very near future. But if the Windows version will receive a good public reception, I will consider to do a porting of it for other platforms, including Mac.
Nevertheless, I am pleased for your interest in Speedy Painter, and I hope to satisfy your request someday. Thank you for your feedback!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

    • Have you extracted the content of the archive? The file SpeedyPainter_v1.3.zip is a compressed archive. You can use winrar or 7zip to extract it. Once extracted you will find the executable SpeedyPainter.exe, and that is the one you should select to start the application. Tell me if you still have problems.
      Hope this helped!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  1. Crashes immediately in Windows 7 Home premium edition 64 bit. (Even when I run it ans Administrator.) Pity, I would have loved to have tried it.

      • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series. It’s a gaming graphics card. It should work.

Also: Intell Duel Core 1.83 GHz, 4.0 gigs of RAM.

      • mm, this is strange.
According to your graphics card specifications it supports OpenGL 3.2, so it should work.
I will investigate further about this issue, and i think i should add some sort of error reporting message when the application is not able to start like in your case.
Hope to fix those issues soon in next release, I suggest you to stay tuned to this blog in order to know soon about the next updates! Thank you for the feedback
        sincerely,
        Andrea

      • After updating my drivers, I discovered that my video card only supports OpenGL 1.1. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
Where are the system requirements for SpeedyPainter listed?

      • Ah, ok, so that makes perfectly sense.
I am sorry but Speedy Painter requires OpenGL 2.0 capable graphics card.
You are right, I mentioned that requirement in the download locations at Softpedia and CNET, but i completely forgot to mention that on the official SpeedyPainter site! Thank you for making me notice that.
I will update the information on the site soon.
Thank you for the useful feedback!
        Sincerely,
        Andrea

  2. Thanks for the Speedy ๐Ÿ˜‰ reply. An error message on start up would solve a lot of confusion for those of us who can’t run it. I am also confused by my video card, I found the same information you did. I will keep posted, I’d really like to try this program, it looks awesome.

    • Thank you for the positive feedback! I am glad it works properly on your PC! Yes, I should consider developing a version for tablet, but for now I am concentrating my efforts on the windows version. Stay tuned for future development! Thank you!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  3. Ive only just discovered and explored the Easy Painter blog. Its marvelous , both the screenshots and the blog itself are so clean looking. I was very curious about the reference feature. The program seems a wonderful canvas for an artist but I am a non-artist. I was hoping the reference feature could be used as a layer that I could switch on and off underneath the paint brush stroke layers ,sort of like a tracing guide and be able to vary the opacity of the photo. It would also help fine tune colour selection. I know their are many painting programs that clone a painting. I’ve grown frustrated with the one I use, I want to add my own creativity, some personal originality. I’ve taken an acrylic painting class, without success. My instructress felt that because I can’t visualize an image in my mines eye, I could not learn to draw or paint, she was very apologetic. Actually I don’t have a mind’s eye. I can’t even visualize an apple. I could paint the blocking in, add a few more strokes and well, things would go badly. As you can see, my talent is verbal, conversational. I know you present this program as a clean canvas for artists but my suggestion would widen the audience for Easy Painter, perhaps leading many to become real painters, after they no longer needed the hand holding that a photo layer provided. Just one more suggestion, include a PayPal donate button so that we can express our thanks and appreciation.

    • Thank you for your kind and detailed comment. I am really glad you appreciate the software, and I really like the kind words you used.
I think i understood your request, but unfortunately I think this solution would go against the original nature of SpeedyPainter. SpeedyPainter was created as a pure painting software. For example, the fact that you can export the drawing process is like a proof that someone has really done a drawing starting from a plain grey sheet, and the drawing is not just the result of manipulating a photo.
I, as artist myself (an amateur artist actually ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), I always loved painting in its purest form, without means that could in some ways be like a way of “cheating” (pardon me the word). I know that also old masters, even Leonardo da Vinci, used some means that can facilitate the drawing process, like grids, or even “camera obscura”, but i never loved those means.
Like the amazing guys at CGHub I think that tracing is not an exercise that makes your skills improve, since it doesn’t help you how to master proportions and make artistic decisions while you are drawing. In SpeedyPainter I even decided to prevent the user to pick the colour from the reference image, since I prefer that the user will learn how to find the correct colour by his way, and color picking from the reference would be too easy and will make him skip all the understanding about color theory.
I am sorry if my answer will not satisfy your request, but I hope you will understand why I made those decisions.
Thank you again for your genuine interest in my software, it is really very appreciated, and I hope you will like the improvements I plan to add to SpeedyPainter in the near future!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  4. Was impressed with SpeedyPainter within a few minutes of trying it. Ran just fine under XP on my home workstation — no graphic tablet to make the most of it, but loved the playback feature & being able to export to video.
Thought it was so cool that I hoped to interest the kids in the class I taught the next day. However I hit a brick wall when I tried SpeedyPainter on the school machines that are running Win7. Came up with an error message that “DevIL.dll” couldn’t be found (…even though the file was there). Might this be because Admin privileges are needed to run the program? Or is it something to do with a PC’s OpenGL limitation?
Tried “SpeedyPainter” on my laptop, knowing it wouldn’t work (because the graphic card doesn’t meet the requirements that you mentioned in posts here) — but got a different error message (…just that old generic one that a program experienced a problem & has to close).
So there you go. I’m impressed & would like to encourage others to try your software. It’s great that it’s “portable” — but I’m stumped as to why it wouldn’t run on the school PCs because I’m pretty sure they do support opengl 2.0.
    cheers,
    – phil.

    • Thank you for the nice words!
I am really glad you appreciate the software and you want to use it in your class.

The error you are encountering seems very strange, and i have not a clear idea of why this happens. I can try to suggest you to extract SpeedyPainter on a regular folder, and not under the usual Windows’ Programs folder (if you didn’t already).
If the problems seems to still happen, I suggest you to try previous version of SpeedyPainter (v1.3) and see if the problem still arises (maybe I could have added a bug in version 1.4). Version 1.3 is still available in the official SpeedyPainter site (here).

Please bring me up to date, and please do not heistate to let me know if some of these solutions work.

      Thank you in advance,
      sincerely,
      Andrea

  5. Just … WOW . The program is simple and useful , and when I say useful I mean fun ๐Ÿ˜€ . It loads up instantly and it have a nice and smooth gui . It’s very awesome , but I have found some bugs also . Like: in rotation mode if I rotate the table between -15 and +15 g the gray circle in the middle doesn’t colorize at all ; when erasing the erasing part isn’t in real time , it shows what you erase only after you release the left mouse button , not when it’s actually pressed; there is no speed control in replay options and the movie is showed very fast for people who doesn’t draw much ๐Ÿ™‚ . What I want to see new is some sort of layer control , add/remove layers and order them , and why not some sort of animation support
    This product is awesome ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you for the nice comment and for the useful suggestions.
You are right, I am actually aware of some of the bugs you listed, and I hope I will be able to solve them soon. The eraser behaviour needs to be improved, but for now the classic eraser behaviour is a bit tricky to implement without changing a lot of my drawing algorithm, or maybe I am missing something trivial..
Thank you for the useful suggestion about speed control on the drawing process, I always export long paintings, so I hadn’t thought about that ๐Ÿ˜€
I think I should add also some sort of keyframe information, in order to allow seeking at a particular position in the replay process.
About multilayer capabilities, I am glad to inform you that the new release of SpeedyPainter (v2.0) finally introduces layers! The blending mode is restricted for now to normal blending, but I am planning to add at least a “multiply” mode soon.
Hope you will like the new features in Speedy Painter 2.0, and if you discover other bugs or have other suggestions, please do not hesitate to let me know, your impressions are always well appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  6. I can’t open any images? when I use your application it shows the folders but no files. When I go to the picture, right click and select open with the application. it opens but no picture shows up. can you please help me?

    • Of course you can, speedy painter supports some of the most common image formats, like jpg, gif, png. To open an image you have to select the image->load button in the toolbar, or just press the ‘l’ key, or you can simply drop an image inside the SpeedyPainter window. Hope this helps.
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  7. this is pretty neat software i hope you keep working on it..

a couple things.. first of all my tablet “works” for drawing but pressure sensitivity does nothing..?? not sure why.. it works fine with Gimp 2.6 , Photoshop, Sculptris, MeshMixer, Blender and even Corel Painter..
its a Cheap monoprice tablet(UC Logic drivers), its a very common tablet these days, cheap price but works pretty good.:)

another thing.. when drawing thin lines they look kind of jagged like they are not antialised or something, they look like lines pained with MS Paint or something not very attractive..(i even tried changing the brush to a soft alpha dot and that didnt help..
unless i really need make it a bigger gradient or something??)

  8. Oh i think i kinda found an answer to the jagged lines issue..(still not smooth as i would like it though..) if you turn the hardness down to 0 then it looks a little better..

Another request.. would it be possible to put the reference view to the left side of the screen?
and draw on the right side? (you must be left handed or something. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I am happy to inform you that in the new version of SpeedyPainter, the reference view position is configurable in the “.ini” file, and, with the default settings, it appears now on the left side of the application window. I have to admit that this configuration is a lot more confortable (I am a right-handed person too), thank you for the useful advice! ๐Ÿ˜€

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  9. i kinda sound the solution for the “jagged lines”, turn the hardness to ” 0 ”

just a few items to consider,

    1. for the UI put labels on things.. so we can see them “Size”, “Opacity”, “Hardness”
at all times, right now you have to click the little handles then it will say “size” etc..
also, pressure, fixed flow , and textured need to be labeled as well..

    next,

    2. can you make it so we can put the reference view is on the left side please?
its alot more comfortable to me that way, drawing on the right side, looking at the left side..
(Maybe you are left handed? not sure, maybe just personal preference)

anyhow keep u the good work.

    • Thank you for the feedback!
It seems like if the actual image is big, and the image is zoomed out (i.e. the image is bigger than the actual pixel area in which it is rendered), the thin lines will look jagged. It is just a problem of texture filtering, but if you zoom in the image you will notice that the line isn’t actually “jagged”. Please do not hesitate to tell me I’m wrong, if this is not what happens to your case.
About the labels on GUI widgets, I thought they would be distracting, so i preferred not to add them; considering that there are just few GUI widgets, I thought people would have remembered them soon, once they used them. Maybe I should add an “info mode”, where all the labels are visible, and users will be able to enable/disable it with some function key or from the ini file. Thank you for the advice.
About the reference view, I agree with you. Actually me too, I feel a lot more comfortable with reference on the other side, and I hope to add this variant soon. The only reason that justifies the choice of a reference view on the right side is very simple: this solution required the minimum programming effort :D.
But the idea of a reference view on the left (and maybe independently resizable) has always been in my mind. So I hope to add it soon, when i will have more free time.
Thank you for the nice words, and useful suggestions!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  10. Awesome app. Reminds me Sculptris a lot. Especially clean UI, just most important tools, that are easy accessible makes work fast and fun. No need to think what tool, brush should I use for this or that.
    But 2 things:
    – pressure won’t work with my pentagram tablet :/ at home
    – pressure work with bamboo, but layer get transparent after each stroke and show only last stroke.
Nevertheless I see this app to become My fauvorite, just like Sculptris for sculpting.

    • Thank you for the nice comment. I’ve never heard of that Sculptris application before, but I know zBrush, another amazing software from the same developer. But now that I saw some screenshots of Sculptris, I have to agree with you, the interface is very similar.
Well, I actually feel honored that you compare my simple application with a software made by the makers of zBrush! ๐Ÿ˜€
I am sorry, but for now i use a Wacom library to get data from the pen tablet, so I don’t think it will work with other type of tablets.
Regarding the behaviour with your bamboo tablet, well this is quite strange, I will investigate further on that.
      Thank you for the support!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  11. Thank you, this is an awesome program! the UI is clean wich i like very much, and the screen record is great. Will send you something soon (i dont have internet connection at home, so “soon” is a bit relative :P)

Anyways, could you list the all the shortcut keys in here somewhere. I dont have a US keyboard (i have a Finnish keyboard) so to change the brush size i have to press AltGR + 8 or AltGR + 8, in itself thats not a problem as i can map the keyboard shortcuts to the buttons on my tablet. But the problem is just that i havent found all the keyboard shortcuts yet. Like what is the shortcut for Undo? (oh and is there a shortcut to get the zoom level to 100%?)

    • Thank you for the nice comment!
I will be glad to see your drawing, when you’ve finished it do not hesitate to tell me, and if you want I will add it in the official speedypainter gallery, here: speedypainter.altervista.org/gallery/php.

You can have an almost full list of the keyboard shortcuts of the program by pressing F1 inside the application (or clicking on the ‘info’ button in the upper right part of the toolbar).

The keys to increase or decrase brush size are not listed in that dialog, but they are the standard ‘[‘ and ‘]’ keys used by most of the drawing programs i know.

Undo and Redo keyboard combinations are the classical “CTRL+Z” for undo, and “CTRL+Y” for redo.

To fit the cavas in the screen, you can use the key ‘c’ (which stands for center canvas).
The behaviour of that command varies depending on the status of the GUI, when the gui is hidden the canvas will fit the entire window area, on the other case it will not cover all the area, in order to not overlap too much with the GUI widgets.

Thank you for appreciating my program!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  12. Your webpage does not render correctly in chrome.
looks ok in IE and FF, but in chrome, right hand half of ironman video is cut off,
and some page shadings are missing. FYI

    • Thank you for the advice. This is strange, actually I use Chrome too, and the iron man video preview is shown properly in the SpeedyPainter home page. Can you tell me which version of Chrome do you use? I use version 22.
Thank you for informing me about that!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

    • Yes. Actually the user feedback page is hosted in the SpeedyPainter blog, so if you click on the “home” button here, you will be redirected to the start page of the blog, instead of the SpeedyPainter site. I should fix this someway..
      Thank you for your comment,
every feedback about usability of the software and the site is always very welcome
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  13. Hi Andrea, I am just a casual user of graphic applications and I found your application to be wonderful! All I wanted was a light-weight application to paint something once in a while and ‘Speedy Painter’ delivers much more than that. The ‘reference view’ feature is something I have never seen in any other application yet and is a big help for drawing from references.

The only thing I miss most in your application is the ability to zoom in and out through keyboard shortcuts. I am trying to use a ‘Genius’ tablet to paint, but, if I am not mistaken, I have to use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. Would be better if the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ keys on the keyboard could zoom in and out respectively.

Wishing you great success with your sweet application!

    • Thank you for the nice comment!
I am really glad that you like SpeedyPainter!

I am happy to inform you that I just released a new version of SpeedyPainter (v2.3), and, thanks to your suggestion, I’ve also added the keyboard shortcuts ‘+’ and ‘-‘ for zooming.

I’ve always forgot to add those keys, since I use an old Wacom Graphire 4, and it has a wheel on it, so I always use that for zooming.
Both the wheel zoom and the keyboard zoom, work relative to the current cursor position, so if you have your cursor over a detail of the image, and you zoom in or out, the detail will still remain under the cursor.

Thank you again for the very nice comment, it really encourages me a lot in the further developement of SpeedyPainter!

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  14. This is so cool! I love the simplicity of the interface. It’s easy to get bogged down in programs like photoshop. I think it would be nice to be able to change the brush shape. Sometimes I want a rectangular brush or an oval brush. The ability to change the canvas shape/size would be nice too. It won’t kill me not to have these things, though.

My favorite parts of this program are the canvas rotation and reference modes. I have a really tiny Wacom Graphire 4. One thing I never got used to was the tracking on it, so being able to change the angle of the canvas helps me get at certain areas of the canvas more easily.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the brushes are not smooth on my screen. They look pixelated. I’m running Windows 7 64bit home version, so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not.

      • I finally tried to save something. I wasn’t finished with it, and when I opened it up the next day, the image had been flattened. Is there a way to preserve the layers for works in progress?

      • You are perfectly right. If you save the image with the “image->save image” button the image will be flattened in a single layer image, in the uncompressed “.png” image format.
To preserve the whole multilayered image, you have to use the “drawing process->save” button (or just press F8).
I think i should clarify this somewhere in the app, since this can be misleading, and to prevent other users to lose the multilayered version of their drawings.
Thank you for making me notice this flaw!
        Kind regards,
        Andrea

    • Thank you for the kind comment! I am glad you appreciate the software. We have the same Wacom tablet, so i hope SpeedyPainter works well with it. ๐Ÿ˜€
The availability of a brush library is under my plans, but it is still under development.
Regarding the canvas size, you can modify it using the “new image” button, on upper left corner of the toolbar.
I am aware of the problem with very small brush, actually it occurs to me only when i choose a brush size of 1 pixel. I will further investigate on the motivation of that pixelated behaviour.

Thank you for the positive feedback! Hope you will do great drawings with SpeedyPainter!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

      • Thanks for replying to my post and everyone else’s! You seem to be extremely dedicated to this program, and it definitely shows! Quite frankly, I don’t think I’ll ever need to use photoshop again.

  15. It’s nice to see, that people like you put so much effort into developing a software and sharing it with others! The GUI has a very clean look, I hope even when more features may be added, that it’ll still feel the same way, that is uncomplicated.
When I first tried to run it on my notebook, it crashed, but after setting it up to use the dedicated graphics card in the system settings it worked fine (Win8 Pro 64Bit). It starts up fast. ๐Ÿ™‚
What caught my attention for this software was the ability to record the process. I only know that feature from Open Canvas (v1.1 is free, has networking abilities).
I haven’t used the reference view yet, but it looks really useful. I’ve got a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch and the rotation using gestures on the tablet doesn’t work. But since the rotation in SpeedyPainter is really easy, it’s not a problem. Pinching changes the brush size and scrolling zooms. I wish it was the other way around.
Now here are some things, that I feel hinder the workflow. The color picker is really small, even on my 24″ screen (running in FullHD). Changing the brush size should be like second nature. I don’t like grabbing a slider or punching in numbers for this. Setups I found very convenient where those where I could hold CTRL and resize the brush by dragging with the right mouse (or Stylus) button to the left and right and changing opacity while dragging up and down. But any sticky hotkey would do. Hardness could also be controlled this way.
I’ve got a QWERTZ keyboard layout, so undo by CTRL+Z is quite a stretch. And often I don’t know what some hotkeys are mapped to on my keyboard. So the ability to customize the hotkeys (e.g., ini file) would be nice.

And here are some additional thoughts. The idea of having the option to overlay labels or icons for the sliders and checkboxes is a good one. I also read, that you already have ideas for a brush library. I would like that. Someone suggested oval brushes, that would be easily doable, if one could add his/her own brush alphas. I haven’t yet seen any application that made rotating the brush easy. Sometimes I had to go to a brush menu everytime I wanted to change the orientation, or use insane hotkey combinations. So if that’s a feature that may be implemented in the future, a simple sticky hotkey would be awesome. I think this would work best, when dragging the mouse (no mouse button) in one direction determines the orientation.

I may not be as talented as other people, therefore I also would like to see a blender brush. ๐Ÿ˜€ These exist in traditional media, too (since the link to traditional media seems important to you). I personally prefer coarse blenders over smooth ones, so if blending is ever gonna make it into speedypainter, maybe the brush could consider the chosen brush image (if there’s a library).

At last, one small bug: When the help screen is open, the close button won’t work. You have to exit the help first.

Even if this post might sound demanding, it’s real nice work, you’ve done so far! Thank you!

    • Thank you for the deep and detailed comment!
I am glad of your genuine interest in the application.

I’ve read all your suggestions, and they are all well founded.
I’ve never considered that some tablets have already some pre-defined gestures for rotating, I will try to conform to that standard.
You are not the first one that makes me notice the problem of a too small color picker, I think I should increase its size in the next version. ๐Ÿ˜€
I like your suggestion on the way to change brush size/opacity without a slider, unfortunately the CTRL key is already used for rotating, so I should think a different keyboard combination (or reconsider the hotkey for rotating..).

Regarding your keyboard layout, that makes me wonder on what is the usual keyboard combination for undo/redo on your system? I thought CTRL+Z / CTRL+Y were standard keyboard combinations for every application, maybe those actions are mapped in a different way in your country?

Yes, the brush library is still under development, I have to design it in a consistent way, since i don’t want to lose the ability to import/export drawing processes, but on the same time I want the user to be able to define his own brushes, and add them to the library, so I have to make the right choices in the design of this component.

Regarding the blending brush, it is definitely in my plans, but i have to investigate a bit on the right way to implement it, I have not a clear idea for now ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you again for the kind comment,
I hope you will enjoy using the application, and you will like the additions i am planning to add in the next releases!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  16. Hello there, this seems like a nice piece of software.
I’m interested in you, though, and I’m sure others are; are you both an artist AND a developer?
Did you study computer science or learn on your own?

This blog needs an about you page! :p

    • I am a software developer, I studied computer science at university, where I followed some interesting courses on computer graphics, virtual reality, OpenGL, graphical interfaces. I also worked in that area and I acquired knowledge in computational geometry, as well in some of the most well known libraries and algorithms used in 3d graphics.
Regarding my “artistic side”, I am just an amateur artist, but I always desired to improve on that side, since I always showed a good predisposition to that field since i was very young.
Thank you for the interest, hope you are satisfied by my answer ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. ยฟcuales son los requisitos del Sistema? ยฟWin 32 o 64 bits? Este tipo de informaciรณn es importane y deberia estar en algun bien lugar visible de La web del Sitio.

    • you just have to go here:
      http://speedypainter.altervista.org/download.html
and click on the download arrow.
This way you will start downloading a file called “SpeedyPainter_v2.3.zip”. It is a “zip” compressed archive, to extract it you need a program like winzip, winrar or 7zip, or, if you have Windows7 or 8, you can just right click on the file and select “Extract”. Once extracted, just execute SpeedyPainter.exe.

SpeedyPainter works only on Windows systems (XP/7/8), and only on hardware that supports openGL 3.0 capabilities (it needs OpenGL FBO extension).

  18. Hello, i just downloaded the latest version, but it could not be opened. Everytime i tried to open it, it always showed up a dialogue box said Speedy Painter has stopped working and must to close the program.

    • Hi, thank you for the feedback, please be sure that your system configuration fulfils SpeedyPainter requirements. In order to work properly, SpeedyPainter requires a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.0 specifications. Kind regards, Andrea

  19. Hello, wonderful program, thank you.

What I really like in your program is how fast it’s updating itself. I always hated how in programs like GIMP or Photoshop if you draw with big brush then brush stroke update becomes very very slow. Your program on the other hand doesn’t care about it and is very fast. So this makes for a very smooth experience.
Interface seems to be very good. Very precise and clear, nothing seems to clutter the screen.

    Now for suggestions.

Mostly I’m drawing character concept art and some of that time is wasted on fixing mistakes. For example the whole body may not be fitting into canvas, so I either make selection and scale the character down or increase canvas size. Unfortunately current version of SpeedyPainter doesn’t allow either of the methods.
    So my suggestions would be:
    – make it possible to resize working canvas (scale with all layers or just canvas);
    – make it possible to apply transformations (scale, rotate, flip) to selected pixels of active layer;
    – make it possible to copy, cut selected pixels of active layer and paste them.

Best of luck, it’s nice that someone finally made painting application that takes advantage of GPU.

    • Hi! Thank you for the very nice comment. I am pleased that you appreciate the software. ๐Ÿ™‚
Your suggestions are very useful and well founded. One of the biggest lacks in current version of SpeedyPainter is the inability to cut and paste parts of the drawing, and this feature is definately in my plans for future versions of it.
I hope I will be able to add such features soon, and I am very glad that the software could be useful also to concept artists, whose work i’ve always admired a lot.

I hope you will like the features is will add in the next releases of SpeedyPainter,
and thank you for helping me improving it! This is very appreciated.

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  20. Andrea, is there any way to not record while we are painting?
I don’t need that feature at all and it seems to slow things down a tad..

    thanks.

    • Hi!
You are right, actually I also noticed that, the drawing seems to become a little “heavy” when the drawing process becomes quite long..
I should consider that suggestion. In the meantime, before I will add that modification I suggest you to save the drawing process info a file and open it again. This should solve that.
Similarly. I think I should also add a different image format that preserves the multilayer structure, but without storing the drawing process steps in the file, since very long drawings become quite big in size too.
      Thank you for the feedback,
I hope I will satisfy your request soon
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  21. I find it VERY nice software – not overtaken by unnecessary features like many drawing/sketching programs. Heres what I just find out – I was in the middle of some quick concept and I wanted to add reference picture. When I did though it just… erased everything I had so far replacing it with canvas of the same size as reference… It may be good for somebody who is just trying to copy photo but I personally just want to have option to look at few features of original and keep creating my own stuff. It could at least ask before replacing all I had so far… What would be nice to see – ability to have one (or more) reference pictures of different sizes then what we are creating at the moment. Please kindly give it a thought. I’m back to drawing.

    • Thank you! This is a very smart comment. You actually anticipated some of the features I am planning to add in next releases of the software (the one concerning the reference view additions). You are right, I should add also some confirmations dialogs before applying actions that cannot be undone. This happens in the situation you described, and also with the “new image” action, or when user drops an image into canvas or reference view, in the current version the user actually risks to lose all the unsaved work. This is definitely a high priority bug to fix!
Thank you for the useful comment,
I hope you will continue using SpeedyPainter for your future works!
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

      • No problem man! Sure I will use it – I love that simplicity, swiftness… I will also inform you about any strange things or ideas that may improve that little gem ๐Ÿ˜‰
Another thing I noticed – maybe I am missing something but I find hard to find out (actually impossible) what resolution I am working on at the moment. Lets say I am creating new canvas – its all good, I know exactly the size. But if I forgot for some reason – is there a way to check it after project started? That would be very useful not to mention resizing. Dont get me wrong – I dont want to make it Photoshop by expanding list of options, but some options are just necessary I guess.
Another little thing – when I push f1 and then I would try to close window/program by clicking “X” it will do nothing. I have hit f1 again to close window and then close program itself. I guess it would be just easier if closing program would automatically close that info window.
Will let you know when I find out something more ๐Ÿ˜‰ Keep up good work – so far I am loving it.

        P.S.
Probably somebody said that already but if not… please think about adding symmetry drawing – even the easiest version will do – its so great for quick concepting…

  22. Just a short question. After some drawing I’d like to see what I have done sofar, so I push replay. After showing me the movie, I want to proceed with drawing ON the image. But how do I get the Image back under my drawing? I can’t figure it out… Can you help?

    • Sorry, I don’t think I understood very well your question.

Maybe do you mean that you have started a drawing from an existent image, and the image disappeared when you started the replay?

When the replay ends (and you waited before all the drawing steps were executed again) the canvas should look exactly as it did before starting the replay, whether you started your drawing from an existing image or from an empty grey canvas. This is not what happened in your case?

A current limitation of the software is that you have to wait for the whole drawing process to terminate in the replay mode, before you can get your drawing again as it looked before you started the replay, and I actually have to fix that soon.
A workaround to this is to save the drawing process before you start the replay, so you can reload the drawing process even if you don’t want to wait the whole replay to terminate.

Hope you can find this answer helpful
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  23. I just installed Speedy painter v2.3.4 in Windows 7 but the app. failed to open with a Windows error message ” Speedy painter has stopped working…” What’s going on ? Please help ….

  24. Heard about your app from a friend installed it, and it keeps crashing while opening. I am running on windows 7 32 bit and my graphics card intel(r) g45/g43 express chipset. Do you think it is because of opengl let me know. If so will upgrade my graphics card

    • In response to your question, I’m just a user of Speedy Painter but I reckon your guess is correct. I have tried it on two dozen different machines & it’s only worked on three.

A few months ago I purchased an Asus laptop for a school to use for Multimedia & presumed it would be able to run Speedy Painter. But it turned out that the promotional waffle glossed over the facts & omitted it’s limitations. A similar but slightly more expensive model I purchased a month earlier runs Speedy Painter without any problem, as does my home PC which is so old that dust on the intake vent is thick enough to qualify as cardboard.

On the download page for Speedy Painter there is a link to a utility for checking whether your graphic card is up to spec. I have not tried that myself. Wish you good luck in getting your machine up to spec. Speedy Painter is a joy to use.

    • I can recommend a video card … after reading your post I installed SpeedyPainter on an old desktop running Windows 7/ 64bit/AMD Phenom 11 810 … with a Nividia GT 9800 1GB and S-Painter runs fine … card costs about $35 refurbished on eBay today. Read a few reviews … the 9800 was the hot card when introduced 6 years ago … it’s kind of a legend … don’t buy a video card with less than 1 GB DDR2 or DDR3

  25. Printed most of your site … stopped by our Performing Arts Highschool … passed it along to the Arts Administrator. Not only is SpeedyPainter an excellent CG graphics paint program … it has the potential to be an outstanding Educational Tool. Let me thank you once again, for this excellent program. Freeware? – Yes – But please consider adding a PayPal Donation Button … treating you to morning coffee and pastry … is the very least I can do.

    • Thank you! Comment like this really encourage me a lot in further developing my application! You are very kind spending so nice words for it. ๐Ÿ™‚
Well, I think I will consider adding a PayPal button in the future, but for now I am very busy for that.Thank you for the suggestion!
I hope you will continue using SpeedyPainter, and you will appreciate the future versions of it.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  26. Hello, first of I would like to say the software that you have produce is of excellent quality. I love both the interface, and it’s performance and simplicity (my eyes and brain didn’t feel like exploding when looking at it ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

I do have a suggestion though it’s probably already mentioned, it would be nice to switch brush textures within the application it’s self. This shouldn’t be too hard as you are using Devil/openil which has the ability to read just about any image format you can throw at it. Also it would be nice to have a more visual folder viewer.

And coming from a programmer and artist I would like to ask you a question, what makes your texture updating so fast? Are you using the fixed function pipeline in opengl? Or are you using shaders to manipulate how textures are read and rasterized to the screen? Or is it something else?

Thanks, your’s truly from a stratified user, Robert ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Thank you for the nice comment ๐Ÿ™‚
Yes, a sort of brush library is in my plan for future versions of the software, but i have to design it in the right way in order to make it consistent with saving/reloading of drawing processes.
I use shaders and FBOs, a very useful OpenGL extension. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  27. Would love to try out this program, but it keeps crashing. (“stopped working” before it has even opened) Suspecting that it is a graphics card issue as is for many here. Though I have no idea what I’m looking for in that program suggested to check your card’s specifications.
    Presumably under the OpenGL tab?
    GL_VERSION : 3.1.0 – Build 8.15.10.2372
    GLSL VERSION: 1.40 – Intel Build 8.15.10.2372

I also see GL_ARB_framebuffer_object under the extensions, though in the box it shows (OpenGL 2.1) behind it. Perhaps this is my issue?

      • My internet cut out for a bit, so hopefully this isn’t a second reply…

But from what I can tell, my graphics card is Intel HD Graphics 3000.

It shouldn’t make a difference that my computer is a laptop, right?

    • Thank you for the genuine interest in the further development of the software ๐Ÿ™‚
In future releases I am planning to add a sort of “brush library”, and I am trying to improve the program performances and support towards old graphics cards. Another must add feature is a “resize canvas” tool.
I hope I will be able to add new features soon, and I hope you will like the improvements I will add, I will be very interested in reading your impressions about the new releases.
      Thank you again!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

      • The pleasure is all mine – as you see I am checking periodically for new version and OW JOY I can see one today ๐Ÿ˜€ Talking about canvas – one of the best sketching/painting programs I used is MyPaint and one of the highlights is… unlimited canvas (with optional frame if you need sense of size for composition purposes). I have no idea if you are familiar with it but unlimited (limited by RAM) canvas gives that amazing sense of freedom. Also a must have feature for quick concepting – symmetry painting. Just two ideas that are coming to mind. And now.. lets test 2.3.6 !

      • Thank you for the useful suggestions! I will take into account in the next releases of SpeedyPainter.
Unfortunately the new release just adds some bug fixes, but I hope I will be able to add new features soon ๐Ÿ™‚

        Thank you for the support!
        Kind regards,
        Andrea

  28. The program is cool but it has a little problem. It seems to be significantly slow.
My machine is from 2009 and has a built in graphics card.
I understand it to be slow at playing games but a paint type program?
I find ironic that the program is called “speedy”. Or perhaps it is just some bug.

    • Thank you for the comment.
Unfortunately SpeedyPainter is developed using OpenGL extensions that seem to be fully supported only in quite recent graphics cards (actually the problem seems to arise with integrated graphics cards, whereas 4-years old dedicated graphics cards seem to work really well). I am currently trying to expand the software compatibility on less recent hardware.

If you want to try, I think you should obtain better performance by disabling the “GUI shadow” option, inside the SpeedyPainter.ini file.
All you have to do is just to set the GUI_SHADOW flag to 0, instead of the original value of 1, and restart SpeedyPainter.

Hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚ Please do not hesitate to let me know whether this trick makes your user experience more “Speedy” ๐Ÿ˜‰ If the problem still remains, I hope I will solve it in future releases.
      Thank you for the feedback.

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  29. Dont want to spam with too many comments here but one more thing that maybe I just cant find – is there some change-log so I could check whats fixed/new in each version?

    • Don’t worry about many comments, I appreciate them ๐Ÿ™‚
You can find a not very detailed change-log in the official download page, here: http://speedypainter.altervista.org/download.html

The new version doesn’t add a lot, i just fixed some bugs, like the fact that canvas flip was not reflected also in the reference view.
I hope to add more consistent features in next releases!

Thank you for the precious support.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  30. Much better with the GUI_SHADOW flag to 0.
It has gone from like 500ms lag to like 150ms. Still slow but now it is at least usable.
For comparison another app that I tested had almost unnoticeable lag.

    • Thanks a lot for the feedback!
I am glad to know that the GUI_SHADOW trick makes things work better.
I will try to find other solutions that will hopefully further reduce the lag.
Thank you very much for the feedback.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  31. hello, im encountering a bug current where whenever i attempt to do anything on the canvas with my tablet, it only draws on the right hand side of the canvas, i can still access all the buttons normally, and if i use my mouse it will draw on the rest of the canvas fine. when i switch the window to my secondary screen it sometimes fixes it, and sometimes stops working at all, what do you recommend i do?

      • it is a wacom bamboo pen and touch, all my drivers are up to date. the behavior is even more bizarre as the mouse, and touch options function normally and edit as they should, but the pen is the only one that acts strange. it only fuctions on my main screen, and doesnt work at on my second.

    • I have a similar problem, but when i draw, the strokes show a few inches to the left!
Not only that, it draws everything at about half the width. (If it draw a circle, it shows as an oval… and to the left!)
      I’m using a Wacom Intuos 5.
No issues when i use a mouse.

    • Hi Adam,
I am happy to inform you that this issue should be fixed in latest version of SpeedyPainter (v2.8.2), that you can dowload from the official site: http://speedypainter.altervista.org/.
Hope this new release works fine also on your configuration.
Thank you for the feedback, and please do not hesitate to let me know if you still incur in some problems using the software.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

    • I am very glad that you appreciate this new feature!
I hope to add a selection mechanism soon, thank you for your genuine interest in my application, i really appreciate it ๐Ÿ™‚
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  32. After downloading and unzipping with 7 zip, within I find that the .exe file is only 190 KB in size and does nothing but bring up a quick flash of a box then disappears. I can’t get an install and I have tried repeatedly to download it from your site and also from all of your mirrors sites with the same results. It seems to me that the .exe file is too small (?) What am I doing wrong with this download?

    • Yes, the executable file is only 190 KB in size.
Probably your hardware does not support OpenGL 3.0 specifications, this is why the software is unable to start on your machine.
      Best regards,
      Andrea

  33. Hi there author of SpeedyPainter, I just wanted to say great job with the software! ๐Ÿ˜€
Though I also had a couple of questions.
Is there any way possible to use this for commercial use, and also is there any way to remove the logo in the left bottom corner when exporting the video?

  34. Perspective tool is a great addition, thank you!

One thing though: in version 2.7.2 I can’t draw with a brush for some reason. Once I click on canvas with brush – the layer I work on immediately becomes transparent (opacity is full though) and I don’t see if I add any strokes.

    • Hi
      Thank you for the feedback.
This behaviour is very strange..does this happen also in version 2.7.1? If I remember well, I should have not added modifications in the brush algorithm in the last release..
thank you for the useful feedback, as always ๐Ÿ™‚
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

    • I am having the same problem. Win 7 64 bit, Nvidia GTX 480 card. When I click on the canvas with a brush the background goes transparent and no brush strokes appear! Bummer, program looks very cool… Also, when I add new layers, the BG comes in as transparent as well. I have the latest drivers from Nvidia installed… version 2.7.3 I disabled pen services…

      • Hi,
It seems like this problem arises with nVidia cards, I have an AMD one and on my hardware all works fine.
Does this problem happens also with version 2.6?
I am planning to revert my drawing algorithm to version 2.6, since for some users this strange behaviour happens only with version 2.7.1 and newer ones.
        Thank you for the support!
        Kind regards,
        Andrea

      • Ho-ho-ho, here is speedy support). I installed version 2.6 and it worked! Thank you. The first thing that I noticed with 3000> pixels brush and Undo begins to lugs. Save image icon is bad. I can’t understand that it floppy disk (this is advice from the UI designer ๐Ÿ™‚ ) And one of the most important thing in drawing programs is the rapid increase in the size of the brush and paper. Smth like this:

I would be happy to share ideas and suggestions for your software! Ivan.

  35. Yes, it also happens in version 2.7.1.
    Version 2.6 works fine though.

Strange, I remember having 2.7 version that was without this behavior. I think I had version 2.7 and didn’t updated to 2.7.1 at the time.

    • Thank you for the prompt reply!
Yes, this makes sense, since I added some modifications in the brush algorithm since version 2.7.1. Yes you are right, I previously released also a version 2.7, but I removed it from the download area since it has some bugs.
In version 2.7.1 I applied some changes in the brush algorithm with the aim to improve performance, but from what you say it seems it has some problems.
It seems that every vendor has its own “specific” implementation of OpenGL standard..this is quite frustrating..
For example in my configuration nothing changes in the behaviour of the brush, and I assumed the same happened also for others..
Thank you for the advice, I think i will restore soon the previous implementation of the brush (the one in v2.6), in order to guarantee better support to a greater amount of hardware configurations.
Do you know the name of your graphics adapter?
Thank you for the precious feedback, it is really well appreciated!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

      • My pleasure, Andrea.

My graphics adapter is Nvidia GeForce GTS 450.

One thing to note is that I don’t have the latest drivers at the moment (I have 306.97 version installed). I can try with latest drivers later if you think it can make a difference.

        Thank you for quick response!

      • Well, I am not sure that upgrading your driver will make a difference, but you can try if you want, maybe it will work.
I will try to fix this issue soon ๐Ÿ™‚
        Thank you again,
        Andrea

    • Hi!
I tried to revert the drawing algorithm to version 2.6, and I am planning to release a new version, with the bug hopefully resolved.
I still haven’t updated the site, but the new version is available for download here:
      http://speedypainter.altervista.org/data/SpeedyPainter_v2.7.4.zip
Hope this solves the problem on your hardware :), please do not hesitate to give me your feedback about, this is very precious
      Thank you in advance,
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  36. I tried to install Speedy Painter v2.7.3 on my PC (Windows 7 pro ) but always got the error message from Windows “Speedy Painter has stopped working…|” ( please see message here :
    http://i.imgur.com/ni09G3h.png ) .

Please advise . It’s tough for me to hear praises for Speedy Painter from friends and unable to check it out for myself !! . Please…Please help

    Desperately yours,

    tommy

    • Hello Tommy,
I am sorry, but usually the problems at SpeedyPainter startup happen when the hardware has a graphics card that does not support OpenGL 3.0 specifications.
If you are sure that your graphics card supports that specifications, maybe then you should just install a more up-to-date graphics hardware.
      Kind regards
      Andrea

  37. Hi there!
I must say I really love the SpeedyPainter – it’s crazy little app that I use often for sketching and studies.
There are two things I would love to see though.

First one is the ability to save file with layers. The pdf export and import with layer support would be perfect, but even a native SP file format would be cool.
Right now to keep layers I save the recorded movie.

The second one is a separate setting for brush and eraser. I need to adjust the eraser size every time I want to use it becuase my brush size is often very small.

Thanks for reading and a great piece of software ๐Ÿ™‚
    Michal.

    • Thank you for the suggestions! They are both very well founded, and the first one was actually already in my plans, I just have to decide what is the best solution, I think that “.psd” format is proprietary of Adobe, so I will probably export a “.spf” (“SpeedyPainter file”, I know, I lack of imagination ๐Ÿ˜€ ), or maybe I have to search if there is a not-proprietary standard format for multi-layered images.
Again, thank you for the suggestions, I will take them into account for next releases of SpeedyPainter,
thank you for the support ๐Ÿ™‚

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

    • Hello Michal,
I am happy to inform you that the new version of SpeedyPainter (v2.8.0) now allows you to save the image in a new format called “spf” (Speedy Painter Format) which preserves layers.
I Hope you will like this new addition :),
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  38. 2 bugs
Canvas keeps blinking with selected color instead of painting or erasing.
Can not get rid of perspective grid once activated

can import image but painting clears the canvas.

windows 7 nvidia quadro fx 3700.

    • Hi Ivan,
Thank you for your feedback, this is very precious! Thank you so much for even doing a video of the problem in action!
Can you tell me if this problem happens also with version v2.6? You can dowload it from the official download page, you just have to scroll down till you reach that version.
      http://speedypainter.altervista.org/download.html
Thank you in advance for your help, and for the great support!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

    • I am glad to know this worked, I updated the latest version on SpeedyPainter, trying to revert the drawing algorithm of version 2.6, but with the additions of version 2.7.3. The new version is available clicking on the download button on the SpeedyPainter site, I hope this new version (v2.7.4) works too. I still have to update the site pages, which still state version 2.7.3, but the dowload actually links to the new version.
Thank you again for the precious help ๐Ÿ™‚
      Sincerely
      Andrea

  39. Ok. I install 2.6 and noticed the following:
Firstly when you draw with document waith 3000> pixels Brush and Undo begins to lugs. Secondly you can see on the edges of the brush transparent texture layer. As here http://ge.tt/4WKgeVe/v/0?c.
    Suggestions:
    1. Block background default layer (as in ps), there were no problems with eraser.
    2. And one of the most important thing in drawing programs is the rapid increase in the size of the brush and paper. Smth like this: http://ge.tt/4ut7hVe/v/0?c
In general the program is good, but needs some work in the mechanics of painting.http://ge.tt/4HjMhVe/v/0?c ). I would be happy to share ideas and suggestions for your software!
    Ivan.

    • Thank you for the suggestions.
I hope that the latest version (2.7.4) works fine, like version 2.6, since i tried to restore the v2.6 drawing algorithm in the last version.

Yes, I noticed the problem with big document sizes, that problem is very tied with the capacity of the graphics card, and I should find a way to solve it. Currently, depending on the graphics card capabilities, some very big sizes are not even allowed.

The problem shown in your first screenshot should actually be just a filtering artifact, and those artifact should disappear if you zoom in/out the image, and, If i am not wrong, they should not be present in the exported image.

Thank you for suggesting those shortcuts to manage brush size and canvas zoom, currently canvas zoom is binded with MouseWeel or ‘+’ and ‘-‘ keys, while brush size is controlled with CRTL+wheel or with ‘[‘ and ‘]’ keys. I think i will add your suggested combinations soon ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for sharing your suggestions, every suggestion is always very welcome, cause it is very important to see how things look from different points of view.

Thank you again for your valuable support!
      This is very appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚
      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  40. Hi. Yes i have multi-monitor. Main monitor is 16:9, and 2nd monitor (on the right) is 4:3. I think this could explain the issue. The Wacom is configured to only map to the main 16:9 monitor.
Using a mouse to draw circles comes out fine, and where it should be (not inches to the left, as with the wacom)
Hope that helps find the bug.

    • Hi Tony,
thank you for making me notice this, now I actually noticed that this happens also on my configuration, when I enable multi monitors, it should be a bug introduced in recent releases, since in the past I already tested a multi monitor configuration and it worked fine. I will work on it to fix this issue.
      Thank you for the feedback!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

    • Hi Tony,
This issue should be fixed in latest version of SpeedyPainter (v2.8.2), that you can dowload from the official site: http://speedypainter.altervista.org/
Hope this new release works fine also on your configuration.
Thank you for the feedback, and please do not hesitate to let me know if you still incur in some problems using the software.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  41. I use a cintiq 21ux and it doesnt seems to draw at an offset. Where as my intuos tablet is just fine. Great features in this program. Nice and clean. I especially love the perspective grid. Brilliant!

    • Im sorry i meant to say it DOES draw at an offet on my cintiq. If i draw in the middle of the screen the result will show up at the bottom for example. Otherswise great program.

      • Hi John, thank you for the feedback!
Does this issue happens with SpeedyPainter v2.8.2?
If so, do you have a different behaviour with version 2.7.4?
Thank you for your support, and for the nice comment, I am glad you appreciate the perspective grid tool ๐Ÿ™‚
        Kind regards,

      • Ah,
I hoped the problem was fixed in version 3.0.
Do you have other displays enabled while you use the cintiq?
If you want you can try to see if using version 2.7.4 this problem is still present. I did some modification after that version, to support multi-display configurations, and maybe, with those modifications, I compromized the behaviour on cintiq.
Thank you for the useful support! I really appreciate it.
        Sincerely,
        Andrea

  42. Hey, I was very eager to try this 2 MB large jewel, but sadly it crashes on startup. I have Windows 8 64bit on my laptop, with GeForce GT630M (current drivers, Optimus enabled).

    • Hey! An update! The problem is Optimus. If I start it using the nvidia gfx it works. But in default, it tries to start the app using integrated intel gfx, which doesn’t work.

Now it’s okay for me, but consider making the program choose the nvidia card in default. Now it’s time to paint. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • hi! I am glad you solved this problem ๐Ÿ™‚

unfortunately SpeedyPainter requires a feature that is not very well supported by integrated Intel GPUs, but if you have a modern nVidia or AMD graphics card you should not have problems with it ๐Ÿ™‚

        Happy painting! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sorry for spamming but I have another thing for you: As guys pointed out on Conceptart.org few versions ago, I too like to change brush size by “[” “]” keys, the thing is, that I have a czech keyboard. In czech photoshop, it’s physically the same keys, but software-side it’s “รบ” and “)”. Is there a file, where I can alter the key binding? Or will there be one in future versions? I understand it’s a nonsense to make it work with czech keys by default. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Thank you for the feedback again ๐Ÿ™‚
do no worry of spamming, comments and suggestions on how to improve the software are always well appreciated

Actually with my keyboard, with the keys ‘[‘ and ‘]’ you can change brush size. Maybe I should try with different keyboard layouts, i thought that it worked also with different ones. Thank you for making me notice this mistake.
Yes, in the future i will probably add the possibility to configure the keys using the ‘ini’ file. It will be easier both for users and also for me, since i can’t try every keyboard configuration ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you again for the comments! ๐Ÿ™‚
        Kind regards,
        Andrea

  43. Hi, looks like a nice painting software. But unfortunately i can`t really try it. It is crashes every time right after launch. I`m trying some earlier versions too but they do the same. I`m using tablet PC – Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro with windows 8 pro. Trying compatibility mode gives me same result. Sadly cause i look your video and want to give a chance to Speedypainter. If you can figure out and fix problem that`s would be great. Thank you.

    • Hi Parhelion
      thank you for the feedback.

Actually I am very interested in making the software work properly on tablet PCs like your Samsung ATIV Smart Pc, but unfortunately the software seems not to work properly on Intel HD graphics cards.
I am currently working on extending the compatibility of the software with more different hardwares, and I hope i will be able to fix those issues soon.

Thank you for the precious feedback ๐Ÿ™‚

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

      • Great. Will wait for update. If you need help with testing or other stuff i will help with pleasure. Here is my email for some case – parhelion3d(at)gmail.com

      • Thank you! This help is very precious, I really appreciate it a lot ๐Ÿ™‚
I will contact you for sure, and I hope I will be able to make SpeedyPainter run also on your hardware soon.
        Kind regards,
        Andrea

  44. Hi, I have a suggestion for your FAQ. Like other people experienced and asked about above, SpeedyPainter crashed on startup for me. I first thought the problem was the wrong graphics card or old driver, but it wasn’t. The issue was resolved by changing the nVidia driver options to always use my GTX675M graphics card instead of it autoselecting the integrated card. Problem solved, it works now.
If you put that as an action to try in the FAQ it might help other people. So… after they have checked that their graphics card does support OpenGL, they should check that their driver is actually using it.

  45. It’s a shame you don’t have a donate button! I’d certainly donate to this outstanding blog! I suppose for now i’ll
settle for bookmarking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account.
I look forward to brand new updates and will talk about this blog with my Facebook group.
    Talk soon!

    • Hi! Thank you for appreciating my software! ๐Ÿ™‚
Actually there is a donate button on the official speedypainter site here, so if you still want to donate you are very welcome ๐Ÿ™‚
Thank you a lot for your support and for publicizing my blog!
I hope you will appreciate also the new features I am planning to add in next releases.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  46. I’ve reproduced your disappearing brush strokes bug :/
If I make a new layer, the bottom layers retain whatever’s on them, but whenever I lay down a brush stroke, it deletes the contents of the layer except for the newest stroke. Eraser marks are preserved, I can erase all day, which seems weird to me. ๐Ÿ˜•

Oh, and all of these errors are preserved when you play back the recording.

    I’m using an Nvidia Quadro FX3700M, Windows 7 64,

    • Hi, thank you for your feedback.

Unfortunately this problem does not arises with my pc configuration, so I suppose this is due to some differences in how nVidia and ATI (the graphics card i own on my development machine) follow the OpenGL specifications..this is becoming quite frustrating cause each vendor seems to have its own different interpretation..and I can’t own every single different hardware where i can test/debug my app.

This is why I am very grateful to every one of you that gives me feedback on how my app works on their machines ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you again for the precious feedback, I hope I will be able to fix that soon.

      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  49. Is there anyway to disable the black overlay pop in when I am painting on a new layer that isn’t the background layer? It’s really annoying and a constant eye sore.

    • This is a malfunction that happens on some graphics hardware, usually on intel integrated graphics chipsets.
Amd and nVidia graphics card seems not to suffer this problem..
I am currently working on this problem and I hope to resolve it soon. Thank you for the feedback!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  50. Hello. First of all this software is really great I want to use it for sketching on my portable win tablet in future.
There’s an issue with multiple monitors configuration. I got my main monitor to the right and the second monitor to the left, thus I guess second monitor’s coordinates in system go to minus values as x, y (0;0) is left upper corner of my main monitor. But it seems program calculates coordinates for brush stroke by summing widths and heights of both monitors or kind of. Therefore my strokes appears not in place on canvas, and when I move my secondary monitor to the right everything is OK.

I hope I’ve described my issue well, and sorry for my lame English.

  51. ((*’โˆ€’)๏พ‰{hi
I found your software on Japanese drawing blog and twitter a lot, and it seems like everyone loves it!
But I have problem with drawing on the canvas; the brush and eraser doesn’t move smoothly.
I’m using Windows7, and I’m pretty sure my computer is capable for openGL3.0.
I downloaded again and again, and I also rebooted but still it doesn’t work in right way,
so I’m writing this to ask you if there’s anything I can do to use or download it correctly,
or am I missing something that is important to run this software?
    Thank you.
Oh and… Sorry if there was any weird grammar. (-_-;)

  52. Really want to use this software but on every computer I’ve tried it on it either lags really bad or the strokes vanish after I draw (with a transparent bg). This looks like such a great program too. I just want to draw on it so bad

  53. PLEASE separate size for eraser, in other words having brush size and eraser size independent.
Someone mentioned this once and that was two years ago, this would be very useful!

    • Thank you for the suggestion! You are right, someone suggested this before, but I forgot to add it in my SpeedyPainter’s TODO list XD.
It should not be a very big modification, actually it should involve just few additional lines of code. I will try to add this in next SpeedyPainter release.
      Thank you!
      Kind regards,
      Andrea

  54. Hi. I have but one question;
I have Windows 10 with everything up-to-date and nothing is wrong with my graphics card or any of that jazz, but SpeedyPainter just crashes at the most random times. It happens about every ten times I try to use it. I don’t dislike the program at all, it’s actually my favorite. I just want to know why it keeps crashing on me. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    • Hi,
      Thank you for your feedback.
Unfortunately SpeedyPainter has some problems with some older integrated Intel graphics card, probably due to a bad OpenGL driver support by those earlier cards.
Can you give me some details about your graphics card? I heavily tested SpeedyPainter on an i7 processor with an integrated Intelยฎ HD Graphics 530 card (without a dedicated graphics card), and I experienced no crashes with that configuration.
On the other side, when I tried it on an older i7 with intel HD Graphics 4000 I experienced the same issues you are facing.
A suggestion that I can give is to try to update your graphics drivers. Maybe (hopefully) Intel has fixed those issues also with older cards.
      Hope this can help.
Thank you for appreciating my software.
      Kind regards,
      Andrea
